A recent survey sheds light on the substantial mental health challenges faced by workers in ‘hard hat’ industries such as construction, manufacturing, mining, and waste management. These employees are reported to be three times more likely than the national average to take time off for mental health-related issues, highlighting an urgent need for greater mental health support and awareness within these high-stress sectors.
The data revealed that almost 75% of respondents reported experiencing stress, with 62% having symptoms of anxiety and 43% dealing with depression. Furthermore, a troubling percentage reported thoughts of self-harm or suicide, pointing to the serious impact of workplace stressors. Nearly 40% of respondents had taken leave due to mental health concerns, emphasizing the need for structured support within organizations.
Despite these pressing issues, over 40% of surveyed workers reported that no mental health support was available at their workplace or that they were unaware of any resources. Many also felt uncomfortable discussing mental health challenges openly. These findings suggest that a shift in workplace culture is necessary to foster a supportive environment where workers feel safe seeking help.
At QSSAC (Quality and Safety Standards Accreditation Canada), we recognize the importance of promoting mental well-being as a key component of overall workplace safety and health. Our international accreditation standards provide a comprehensive framework that encourages organizations to implement mental health resources, educate employees, and build resilient workplace cultures. Through QSSAC accreditation, companies can demonstrate their commitment to both quality and safety—including mental health support—enhancing their credibility and creating a positive environment that prioritizes worker well-being.
Accredited organizations are better positioned to adopt preventive strategies that address the root causes of workplace stress, such as excessive workloads, long hours, and the uncertainties associated with contract work. QSSAC works closely with companies to ensure they not only meet but exceed international standards, promoting a sustainable approach to health and safety management.
By achieving QSSAC accreditation, businesses can assure their workforce, partners, and clients that they are dedicated to upholding high standards of quality, safety, and mental well-being. Our approach supports a collaborative environment, empowering both large and small organizations to integrate essential mental health practices and proactively address the well-being of their workforce. Together, we can help create a mentally resilient and healthier industry, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and ensuring that no worker is left unsupported.
